Something material vs living comfortably

Thanks to this forum post i saw, my writer's block was no more:

A fresh grad earning 3k wants to buy a car. (a Honda Civic Hybrid in this case) Point is, he works in CBD area, and thinks he can live on 350 per mth. And he says he's sick of public transport since he has already taken it since pri school right up to uni.

Snobbish reasons, isnt it? And the number crunching is just abit unrealistic. But it also made me think:

Exactly half a year ago i had a similar struggle too.

The only difference is that i already worked for a year plus my pay was 2.9k.

Wah lau, this kinda situation, surely would make anyone's eyes go green. Immediately graduate and he gets 3k pay. Gee whiz.

But after what i read from the contributors of the post, even though they were a bit harsh and to the point of throwing cold water, their points were really valid.

Do you want to be a slave to something you bought, always depreciates, consumes your money like nothing else and then suffer in terms of quality of life? One even had a more classic quote:

"Even if you buy a car just to bring your gf around, surely you are not going to be so hard up as to go to the park to pluck flowers for her valentine's day gift?"

I sat on the thought for a while before i went to bed for the past couple of days. They're right; nothing beats a good quality of life and having no car rather than to have a car and to have to suffer and become a moneygrubber just for a car. It is just not worth it.

Anyway, its fine lah. There is always the cab... and it should work out cheaper than owning a car. There are also rental cars too. Guess the important point here is that there is nothing called an unsolvable problem. We just have to think of a way to get past it. As for the car owning dream, let's just say that my time will come... :) Not now definitely, but one day... *remains hopeful*
